The Snowy River estuary at Marlo

4 min walk

Marlo sits where the Snowy River reaches the ocean. The estuary is sheltered water for paddling and fishing, ringed by wetlands, dunes and beaches.

Walk to the river mouth

The Snowy River Estuary Walk runs about 5 km from the township to Mots Beach, around 1 hour 40 minutes one way, through banksia woodland, salt marsh and littoral rainforest. It ends on the ocean beach opposite Frenches Narrows. More in our walks guide.

Kayak and paddleboard

The estuary is sheltered, so it suits kayaks, canoes and paddleboards. Surfers head out to the beaches at the mouth.

Fish all year

Bream, flathead, bass and mulloway, from the jetty, the banks or a boat. See fishing in Marlo for the ramps.

Birdlife

Look out for little terns along the shore and grey-headed flying-foxes in the coastal rainforest. Pelicans are often on the sand at Marlo.

Sources and current conditions: Parks Victoria: Marlo Coastal Reserve, Visit Gippsland: Marlo. Conditions change, so check before you go.
