East Gippsland Rail Trail

18 km, 20 min drive from Marlo Hideaway

A 96 km cycling and walking trail on the old railway line from Bairnsdale to Newmerella, near Orbost. The eastern end is 20 minutes from our gate.

The route

From Bairnsdale (starting opposite Howitt Park on the Princes Highway) through Nicholson, Bruthen and Nowa Nowa to Newmerella, at Burn Road north of the highway. A shared path of about 2 km continues into Orbost.

Stony Creek Trestle Bridge

About 4.5 km west of Nowa Nowa: an early 1900s timber bridge 276 m long and 19 m high. The deck is fenced off, so riders drop into the valley and climb out the other side. There's a car park, toilet and picnic area.

Surface

Sealed at the Bairnsdale end, then compacted gravel, stony gravel and dirt. The Nowa Nowa to Newmerella section has rough, loose gravel in places, and some sections suit mountain bikes only.

Bikes and transfers

Bike hire is available in Orbost, and Snowy River Cycling runs supported tours with transfers.
